Where two rivers meet and history runs as deep as the mountains — with your dogs along for every mile of it
Everything you need to know before you pack the leashes and hit the road
Perched at the dramatic confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers, Harpers Ferry is one of the most visually striking towns on the East Coast. Cobblestone streets wind past 19th-century stone buildings, Civil War history breathes through every corner, and the Blue Ridge Mountains frame every view.
For dog owners, this is as close to perfect as a weekend destination gets. Trails run directly from town. Restaurant patios welcome dogs by default. The whole lower town is walkable on-leash — and once you get to your cabin, those mountains are yours off-leash.
No size limits. No weight limits. Private acreage. These three are worth every penny

Beyond the trails and plates — what makes Harpers Ferry worth the drive back
The dog-welcome deck at Harpers Ferry Brewing is one of the best afternoon spots in the region. Wood-fired pizza. Panoramic Potomac views from the grain silo deck. Fire pit for shoulder season evenings. Technically in Purcellville, VA — 5 minutes across the river — and absolutely worth the detour.
500+ historically accurate confections from the 1700s–1960s. Candy from the Civil War era. Victorian rock candy. This is the most original shop in Harpers Ferry and a mandatory stop — especially if your dogs got a treat at Battle Grounds and you didn't.
Old-fashioned ice cream shop with outdoor seating connected to Alstadt's. Post-trail reward of choice. The shop is right on the main drag and serves as a natural finish line after a day of hiking.
Appalachian Trail gear, branded apparel, camping essentials, and local goods. Thru-hikers resupply here. You'll leave with at least a hat and a jar of local honey — and probably a patch for the dogs' leash bags.
All three welcome dogs on the grounds. Call ahead to confirm current patio policy.
